Nuclear Medicine/SPECT-CT- The First Hybrid SPECT-CT Facility in the UK Private sector is now available

12 August 2008

The Wellington Hospital Nuclear Medicine service, has been set up in collaboration with the British Cardiac Research Trust, and houses the first hybrid SPECT-CT facility in the UK private sector.

A wide range of nuclear medicine/isotope scans are performed ,however instead of an ordinary/routine gamma camera for isotope scanning, this facility houses a state-of the-art Hybrid scanner (Siemens Symbia-6) that incorporates both isotope technology and multi-slice CT scan technology on the same platform. It can therefore combine functional information from the isotope scan with structural information from the CT scan providing composite images with superior diagnostic capabilities.

Nuclear Medicine techniques are used in a wide range of diseases; for example, to detect cancer, tumours, sports injuries, heart disease, lung embolism, localize infection, brain scans, kidney function, liver disease, lung embolism, thyroid disease and a host of other tests.
