New Treatment for Dry Age Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)

23 November 2009

The Wellington Hospital is pleased to announce the undertaking of a new revolutionary technique for age related macular degeneration.

"Dry" Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is the commonest cause of blindness in the developed world, it has previously not been treatable unlike the "Wet" form of AMD.

A new device the Intraocular Microtelescope is now offering hope to many patients whose eyesight has been affected by age-related AMD. Invented by the engineer and ophthalmologist Dr Isaac Lipshitz MD, the intraocular microtelescope is a remarkable feat of optical engineering, squeezing several sophisticated optical elements into a lens implant of about the same dimensions as a contact lens. The lens is inserted by a procedure, similar to cataract surgery, and works by projecting a magnified image on to the retina.
